Dide.org launches a guide for the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence in education

Dide.org has launched a guide of recommendations for the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education. Experts including psychologists, pediatricians, educators, and technologists participated in its development under the coordination of Dr. Manuel Antonio Vicente, El Neuropediatra, and Dr. Nuria Ros in Psychology. Its objective is to help teachers, educational centers, and families maximize the potential of AI in the teaching-learning process, while minimizing the risks associated with improper use.

A binomial with potential: AI and education

Artificial Intelligence has burst onto the educational scene with the aim of transforming the way we learn and teach. It opens up a range of possibilities to personalize learning, automate tasks, and enhance the development of skills in students. According to a UNESCO study, AI is being used more and more in schools around the world. The study found that 40% of countries are already using AI for teaching and learning, and that this figure is expected to increase to 60% in the next five years.

The guide offers specific recommendations for each educational stage, from preschool to secondary education, taking into account the characteristics and needs of each age group. It also provides a series of guidelines to follow in the use of prompts and in the management of screen time for minors to support families, educators, and educational centers in the implementation of a responsible use of AI in education.

In the opinion of Elena Betés Novoa, CEO of Dide.org: “Artificial Intelligence has enormous potential to transform education and help families, educators, and educational centers contribute to each minor reaching their maximum potential, especially in regards to personalization of education and monitoring the progress of our minors. However, for this use to be safe and effective, it is important that we use it responsibly. This guide is a valuable tool to help the educational community navigate this new landscape and take full advantage of the opportunities that AI offers to improve the learning of all students.”

For his part, Dr. Manuel Antonio Fernández, El Neuropediatra, coordinator of the guide, points out that “AI can help us personalize learning, make education more attractive and motivating for students, and provide teachers with new tools to assess the progress of their students. However, it is important that we are aware of the limitations of AI and that we always use it in combination with the judgment and experience of teachers.”

Personalized recommendations for the educational community

Families, educators, and educational centers must assume an active role in the responsible use of AI in the education of minors. Collaboration between these key actors is essential to guarantee safe, effective, and ethical learning experiences.

-In the family environment, the key lies in communication and knowledge. It is essential to establish an open dialogue with children about AI, explaining its operation, benefits, and risks. Clear rules and reasonable schedules should be established for the use of devices with AI, seeking a balance between screen time and other activities.

-For educators, training and effective integration of AI are essential. It is necessary for them to delve into the operation of AI and its application in the educational field, exploring available resources and training. They must select appropriate tools that support the personalization of learning and the automation of tasks, optimizing time and attention to students.

-In educational centers, it is necessary to establish a clear and detailed AI use policy, defining the permitted tools, the rules of use, and access to them. Provide continuous training to center staff on AI, ensuring that they understand its operation, its benefits, risks, and how to use it effectively and responsibly. Implement robust measures to protect the privacy of student data when AI is used, obtaining prior consent from parents or guardians and storing the information securely. Periodically evaluate the impact of AI on student learning, making necessary adjustments to optimize its use and improve educational outcomes. Encourage collaboration between parents, tutors, teachers, students, and counselors to develop and implement effective strategies for the use of AI in education.
